Carroll Shelby Passes Away At Age 89
May 11, 2012 - 1:17 PM - by pgillette
Carroll Shelby has passed away at the age of 89. The legendary tuner and proprietor of the famous marque that bears his name had been in the hospital for several weeks, suffering from pneumonia. Shelby addressed his fans fourteen days before his death, saying that he was resting comfortably and being taken care of by his children.

Anyone familiar in the least with automotive history is well aware of Shelby's vast vehicular exploits, so we'll just touch on them here. Carroll was a successful race car driver in the 1950s before creating his own racing team to take on the likes of Ferrari, using Ford-powered sportscar called the Cobra. Suffice it to say, Shelby and his Cobra were extremely successful. Later, Shelby's name would become synonymous with the fastest and most powerful Ford Mustang models ever created.

Shelby is survived by his three children Patrick, Michael and Sharon, his sister Anne Shelby Ellison of Fort Worth and his wife Cleo. An official press release can be found below.

2013 Shelby GT500
May 07, 2012 - 7:51 AM - by pgillette
Some days are good. When you hear that the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 has been officially SAE-certified as the most powerful series production V8 in the world, that makes it a good day.

Beating out the 650 horsepower figure initially published, the 5.8 liter supercharged engine has been officially certified with 662 horsepower and 631 lb.-ft. of torque. Ford points out that’s more power and torque than low volume sports cars costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars more than the GT500.

Add to that fact, that the 2013 GT500 is the most fuel-efficient car with over 550 horsepower in any segment available in America, admittedly a very small club.

Unlike high-strung engines found in much more expensive exotic supercars, the GT500 engine generates its massive thrust throughout its operating range with 395 lb.-ft. of torque available just off idle at 1,000 rpm. More than 90 percent of the peak torque is available from 2,200 to 5,800 rpm so that no matter when you squeeze the go pedal, the GT500 will just get up and run.

The combination of the new TVS 2.3-liter supercharger, twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder ensures this stallion can breathe all the way to 7,000 rpm with the peak power production coming at 6,500 rpm and holding fairly steady right... [Read More]

Quality Mustang Parts - Larry's Thunderbird & Mustang Parts
Apr 02, 2012 - 5:52 AM - by pgillette
All companies have great stories about their beginnings and Larry's is certainly no exception. From a small home garage in Pleasant Hill to a large warehouse in Corona, Larry's has been a trusted source for Mustang and Thunderbird parts for over 40 years.

Larry's Thunderbird and Mustang Parts had its beginnings in 1969, in a home garage in Pleasant Hill, California. Its creation was inspired by members of the Classic Thunderbird Club International, who were increasingly discontented with the poor selection and quality of parts available at the time for 1955-57 Thunderbirds. The idea took wing and Larry's Thunderbird Parts was born. CTCI and the fledgling company worked closely together to ensure that the parts supplied were true to original specs, were of high quality, and offered at the best prices. Bird watchers everywhere began to flock, and the industry began to grow.

In 1976 the business migrated south to make a nest in Fullerton, California. Soon, in addition to parts for the early Birds, a section of Larry's was reserved to stable a new product line for the popular Ford Mustang. Appreciation for the "little Birds" and Mustangs continued to soar, although... [Read More]

2013 Cobra Jet Mustang
Mar 28, 2012 - 11:06 AM - by pgillette
Ford Racing is hard at work getting the new 2013 Mustang Cobra Jet race cars inserted into the first production month at Flat Rock, MI. With the 2013 Mustangs due to show up on dealer lots soon, Ford wants the Cobra Jet on the strips this spring around the country.

The run of 50 Cobra Jet production began this week. Brand new bodies were shipped just down the road to Watson Engineering in Taylor, MI to have some in-depth modifications done. There the body structures are lightened by removing several non-structural sections of sheet metal.

In the photos you can see the rear package trays, under hood structure, inner fender and cowl sections and under roof skin gussets chopped out to save weight. The addition of the multi-point roll cage not only makes up for the removed structures, but adds critical safety to what will become a bullet on wheels.

The roll cage is made of 4130 Chrome-Moly tubing and is 8.5 second ET legal for the NHRA. Once work is done at Watson, the bodies will be shipped back to the line at Flat Rock to be completed. There, the supercharged Ford Racing Cobra Jet engines will be installed along with all the electronics, fuel, braking and suspension systems alongside the rest of the 2013 Mustangs.

We will bring you reports as the build progresses.

2015 Ford Mustang Concept Car
Mar 23, 2012 - 12:13 PM - by pgillette
The StangPlanet team wanted to share this article we found over at Popular Hot Rodding! Enjoy!

Popular Hot Rodding is the latest to take a crack at what they think the 2015 Mustang will look like, and have recently published a wide variety of renderings and sketches that show their vision of Ford’s next generation pony car.

These aren’t the first renderings we’ve seen – they surely won’t be the last – but they do provide an interesting new perspective on what could possibly be in store for the Mustang. J Mays, Ford’s Chief Creative Officer, has previously stated that the next generation Mustang will have less retro styling, and these new renderings depict that with a futuristic design that strays from the current retro shape.

So what else do we know about the 2015 Mustang as of right now? For starters, Ford plans on making the next generation Mustang a global car. Styling input will come from all of Ford’s design studios from around the world, as the new Mustang will need to be able competing in a variety of international markets. Overall the car will be smaller and lighter, and an independent rear suspension will replace the... [Read More]

American Muscle Match Made In Heaven?
Apr 09, 2012 - 5:17 AM - by pgillette

Very few Norwegians can say they own a Ford Mustang, but for Andreas Alsip, this dream became a reality last summer when he stumbled across a fine piece of American muscle. Tucked away in a Floridian barn, Alsip soon learned he had potentially found a stellar deal. To his amazement, the car had been sitting in a barn for three months and was only lightly used by all three previous owners. Alsip did a little research on the previous owners and didn’t find anything alarming. The first owners had used it as their run-about car while in Florida for the winter. Alsip also found that it had been a company car at one point. Everything was... [Read More]

Tim Howard's 1967 Shelby GT350 Mustang
Jan 19, 2012 - 6:25 AM - by pgillette

From the day it shipped out, Tim Howard’s Shelby was destined to have a vibrant story that future owners would restate for years. Its first journey from Shelby Automotive in Los Angeles to a dealership in Trenton, Indiana was short-lived when the delivery train derailed, damaging the vehicle’s right front quadrant. After a settlement was reached with Shelby Automotive, Southern Pacific Railroad became the owner of the vehicle and auctioned it off in Los Angeles.

A Ford dealer in Glendale, California purchased her and restored all of the damaged parts with new components. The original owner then purchased the car and... [Read More]

Rick Bombard's 1971 Grabber Green Mach 1 Ford Mustang
Jan 19, 2012 - 6:18 AM - by pgillette
[

Rick Bombard’s classic has been around the block. Several times. But you wouldn’t know it.

He purchased his 1971 Mach 1 Mustang at Summer Carlisle in 1994, and all 14 years since, its eccentric Grabber Green coat has continued to stick out on the road more than most new sports cars.

Beneath the hood sits an M-code 351C 4V Cleveland and a C6 automatic. Unfortunately, his 3.25 trac-loc is long gone and has since been replaced with a “cheesy” 2.79 open rear that he claims makes for “embarrassing peg leg burnouts.”

Peg leg burnouts or not, this classic is loaded with factory Ram-air setup, new... [Read More]
