My rep received a call from a dealer stating that a customer's hood scoop lifted off and went flying! My rep called his boss to tell him and the engineering department along with the builders claimed that there was no way that the hood scoop would come off.
So as they were going back and forth about it, my rep was driving his 427 and decided to see what speeds the hood scoop started acting funny. he said he hit around 120 and WHAM, hood scoop goes flying off! Of course he took the hood scoop into the factory and showed all the naysayers!
Now most builders, sellers and designers don't care much for this non-functional bs, but of course have no choice. My friend wanted a scoop for styling and since Roush can't design their own hoods or even mod the Ford hood, we are all unfortunately stuck with it. I am ordering a new hood next spring to solve the dreaded hood scoop/hood shake. When going very fast (120 mph+) you can see the scoop starting to take off like a freaking space shuttle!!
moral of the story is: yes sir, this is a problem every one of our cars has and the owners are not the only ones who DESPISE it!!
This is why I haven't put one on my Roush. I love the looks but if it lifts off I dont want the damage. Plus its kind of unique not to have one. Most 05's didn't because they weren't quite available just yet back then.
HOWEVER, women lovvve hood scoops...
If you go back in time, even the Romans had hood scoops on their chariots! Major phallic symbol.
Woman sees the hood scoop and her mind says DOH! look at that guys big hood scoop, I wanna go for a ride
The '94 and early '95 SN95 cars had a rearward side scoops that allowed air to flow through and into the rear wheel well.
The inner rear fender was punched out with a flow-through vent. On later models, Ford closed up the fender but retained the outer vent.
Then, around the late '97 models the outer vent had the holes filled in and it was just a textured piece of plastic having the look of holes. The whole concept of putting a vent/scoop back there was ridiculous and blocking it off completely made it even worse.
The '99-2004 cars look horrendous with their edge version of the scoop. At least the Bullitt model had what looked like a 'delete panel' that filled in that sore quite nicely.
The hood scoops on the '94-'98 cars at least had some airflow through them but again they were just worthless. The only time it looked good was when you had a hot engine and drove through some deep water. You would see some steam escape through the vents. ...It's still ridiculous.
At least the '03-'04 Cobra style hood allowed some cooling capabilities. I applaud Ford for developing the Mach1 with the shaker ram-air scoop. I can just imagine the bean-counter politics wars involved in getting that to production!!! Thank you Ford for getting off your over-conservative arse for that one time. That makes for one very nice car.
If you are going to waste some development and product costs installing fake scoops save your time & money. At least get some vents to help cool down the engine compartment and at least help cool the brakes for track events. Make a true sports car...I can't stand fake crap on cars. Could you tell?
Now, gauge clusters are filled with glorified "idiot lights" resembling meters. The end is near
