No matter the year, the dreams of Ford Mustang enthusiasts are perhaps the most respected of any car enthusiasts. We are constantly tended to with special edition and aftermarket models—and we cannot get enough. Whether it's Ford capitalizing on the popular retro throwbacks or aftermarket producers breaking barriers in performance and design, the special editions keep coming. Two additions to the special addition/aftermarket lineup have us really pumped.
Coming from the Saleen compound is the all-new Saleen 550, which was recently unveiled at the Ford GT National Rally II. Saleen took the S281 ‘Extreme’ and created a streetable Ford GT with decent ground clearance and, of course, a backseat. The entire project is a dedication to Steve Saleen’s dedication and involvement with the Ford GT. Only 550 will be produced with eight color combinations: Tungsten, Midnight Blue, Mark II Black, Mark IV Red, Speed Yellow, Centennial White, Satin Silver and the Gulf Heritage Blue/Epic Orange mix-up.

R&A Motorsports has also contributed to next year’s aftermarket collector’s lineup with their 2008 Twister Special. This is no ordinary “collector’s edition” Mustang—the folks at R&A have redefined the Twister in a way that pays tribute to the ’69 edition but is completely relevant in 2008. But it wasn’t easy. The guys at R&A had to secure a partnership with a dealership and find a name that wasn’t guarded with a copyright. They finally secured both, and have released 96 “Twister Special” 2008 Mustangs, both in coupe and convertible models to be displayed later at the SEMA show.
