Bold Moves: 2010 Mustang pricing will undercut the competition

In a time when everyone is desperately seeking good news of any sort - especially out of Detroit - Ford, the company that recently asked for $9 billion in federal aid (that's your money, taxpayer) has given us something to smile at. The 2010 Mustang will be rolling into dealerships cheaper than the Camaro and Challenger across the entire product line.

Yes, just when you thought that the Big 3 couldn't be any more stupid with their decision making *cough*flying $10,000-a-flight private jets to grovel for money*cough* the FoMoCo finally did something right.

The leaked numbers have the base 2010 Mustang V6 coming in at a tantalizing $21,845 with destination included. For perspective, it should be known that the base Camaro V6 will cost $22,995, and the base Challenger V6 rings up at $22,54. For the base model, the Mustang and Camaro come with manual transmissions, whereas the Challenger gets a slightly out of place 4 speed auto as standard equipment.

Now for the real news, the V8 pricing. To nab yourself 8 rumbling cylinders in Ford's new pony car, you'll have to pony up $27,995. That ain't too bad, especially when compared to the V8 Camaro's $30,995 sticker, and the $30,545 you have to put down to get a HEMI under your Challenger's hood.

Hard times means less automobiles sold, but that doesn't mean there cant be cars out there like the Mustang to remind everyone just what it means to live the American dream. As the leader in pony cars since the segment's inception, I think Ford has done the right thing with their 2010 Mustang pricing. Let's hope it pays off.

Please tell me how Ford has done something right when it comes to the 2010 mustang. They are bringing rusty butter knifes to a neuclear war. The 4.0 should be at least $4k less than the base v6 camaro. It is unfathomable that they did not bring out the 3.5 for the 2010 model year. If the dealership lots are filled with leftover 2010's, I for one say Ford deserves it. If anyone does a back to back test drive of a 305hp, 6 speed, independant rear Camaro and then drives a truck motored that sounds like crap 210hp, 5 speed grenade, and a weak 7.5 rear Mustang for $1k less,,,, which one do you think they will buy. Everyone one keeps pointing to 2011my for the upgraded motors, all we got with the 2010 was expensive electronic fluff. Ford has to become more flexible and react much quicker to the changing industry or they and others are doomed to fail. To say that I am dissapointed is the understatement of the new century. I support the Bailouts but I am not happy about them. I realize how much our ecomony hinges on thier survival. Just give us the parts that Ford has on thier shelves. A 3.5, 6 speed and an 8.8. That's a good start, then I wouldn't care what it was priced!!

a lot does suck about this whole situation, thats for sure. i think its important to remember that the 2010 mustang is nothing more than an over-glorified mid life cycle update. we actually got a little more than usual out of this update than a normal mid life update, because ford worried about the competition. clearly it would be a nice thing if ford gave us some serious upgrades to work with, but i personally am not expecting any dramatic updates (thought the probable release of the GT500 in detrot will be nice) until the entirely new model is released (a casual glance at the calendar has me guessing that the first news regarding a new mustang will come around 2014... maybe)
i think ford has done something right in that they have done the best with what they have to work with. their development budget probably doesnt have the $$$ to make a whole new mustang with a serious power upgrade until a few more years out. if this was a brand new mustang, and not just an update, i too would be upset with the lack of improvement, but this is like the move to the new edge mustang, not like the move from the new edge to the s197.

add on: lets also not forget that in this recent bail out, ford actually is not taking any money (unless, they said, if GM or chrysler goes bankrupt, then they will need money) so they must be doin something right... who knows...

i think it is a good idea to sell cheaper, should help with sales. i knew that the new engines wouldnt come out until 2011, so i'm not disappointed in the 2010. i'm probly not going to get a 2011 either, i'm probly going to get a used 07 and make it into a DD while i make my current car into a street beast. but that will have to wait a little while.

Before you flame Ford...

Before you flame ford for their requested $9 billion 'bail-out' read these:
http://media.ford.com/images/10031/F...iness_Plan.pdf
Press Release Detail - FORD CEO ALAN MULALLY TESTIFIES ON CAPITOL HILL - Ford
and form an educated opinion. Ford's been doing a lot to help themselves.

you are right, they have done a lot to help themselves, in fact, since i wrote that post the actual bailout was given. As you know, ford doesnt actually need any of the money in this bailout because of their relatively better financial position.
however, to defend myself, i will simply put this out there:
while ford has done a lot to help themselves, lets not forget that even when a company like ford is doing decent in this day and age, it wasnt me who asked the federal government for nine billion dollars, they did. ford is the luckiest of the big three and it seems, the only ones with any brains, but dont for a second think that they arent in a huge pot of trouble overall. the sad state of the american economy creates this issue: almost anyone can say that almost any company is doing poorly... and be right.
