While most news related to the auto industry in the past weeks has been related to the fact that the big three are currently in a flaming downward spiral that is sure to only end in a disaster the likes of which these companies have never witnessed, the boys over at Ford still managed to make time to give us another shot of the 2010 Mustang. The shot is only a corner of the hood, but it shows what it needs to. Introducing: the “Power Dome” hood for the 2010 Mustang.
Every guy loves things that "pop out" from the rest of a relatively flat surface- if you catch my drift- so it should come as no surprise that I love the already well-known 'hood bulge' that will adorn the new 2010 Mustang. Ford's teaser image shows this bulge- which we mentioned
a few days ago is there because of a strut tower brace on GT models- and I have to say that I think it’s terrific.
“The subtle surface changes on the fender edge make for a more dynamic design,” said Chief Designer Douglas Gaffka in a press release. “The softer, blended-in surfacing of the wheel arch creates a much-more flowing look, giving the car an appearance of a wider stance,” added Saridakis.
Now, though I love making a sexual innuendo joke about bulges as much as the next guy, I acknowledge that this is not much better than a bump on the hood of a car, which seems to tell us that the engine inside is screaming "Hello world! I'm far too big and powerful to fit into this hood normally, so they had to give me some extra space to growl."
The image file from Ford is actually titled "Power Dome," which either suggests that FoMoCO is actually using the term in their marketing of the new hood standard, or the intern who sent out the release thought it would be funny. The “Power Dome” actually sounds like a pretty cool name to me, after all, what is better than power in a dome? Maybe a Mustang with the engine from a Corvette ZR1, the handling characteristics of a Nissan GT-R and the body kit from Knight Rider that can also transform into an F-22 raptor- but not much else.
“The 2010 Mustang is all about crafting a world-class car,” said Senior Designer Robert Gelardi in a press release. “Everywhere you look, exterior and interior, there’s attention to detail in design, engineering and manufacturing befitting this American icon.”
