When the Mustang-Shelby relationship turned 40 years old, the 40th-Anniversary Limited Edition GT500 KR was the perfect birthday present. The company produced 1,000 of the “King of the Road” Mustangs. But 2009 is a new year, and the two auto giants are upping the ante.
Per usual, the 2009 Shelby GT500KR will include a 540 HP, 5.4 liter supercharged V8 complete with the Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack, a 3.73:1 rear axle ratio, short-throw shifter and unique suspension tuning. To pay homage to the classic Shelby KRs, the 2009 will feature a unique carbon composite hood, wheels and its own unique striping.
What’s different this year, however, is the number of KRs that will be produced for the public. Typically, the model is considered a limited edition vehicle. But Shelby has decided to toss exclusivity aside and release an extra 746 GT500 KRs for 2009—bumping the total to 1,571.
Only 541 GT500KRs will be available in the U.S. Get 'em while they're hot!
That total is concurrent with the total number of KRs produced when they originally debuted. It seems Shelby just doesn’t want this birthday party to end!
