Among the lineup of squad cars in Charlotte, North Carolina’s Police Highway Interdiction and Safety Unit, there sits a street legal race car that delivers 500 horses. However, it didn’t used to be legal, and it didn’t used to belong to the police department.
Captain Andy Kornberg’s squad confiscated the blue 2003 Cobra along with a 2005 350Z when they were recently caught racing through south Charlotte. “Thanks for giving me a nice ride,” he said in an interview with WSOCTV, a local news station. "The precedent has been set. If you get caught street racing, we're going to take your car and I'm going to enjoy driving it to be perfectly honest."
He may not have as much fun after the exhaust mods and nitrous boosters have been removed to coincide with the law. But the department was able to add some gizmos of its own. The Cobra is fitted with the latest laser detection radar and a spectacle of blue lights concealed within the grill, windows, tail lights and mirrors.
With 24 of these confiscated street legal rides, the department plans to crack down on speeders and aggressive drivers in broad daylight, ditching the old school behind-the-billboard tactics. “We are going to hide in plain sight,” Kornberg said to WSOCTV.
So, the next time you pull up to the light in Charlotte, make sure the guy revving up next to you isn’t wearing a badge.
