Post Busted: Unique Performance in title-washing raid

Remember Gone in 60 Seconds? It looks like the premise of that Hollywood blockbuster has come to life in a real life title-washing scam. And it’s big time. Ever heard of Unique Performance?

The maker of specialty cars has a superior reputation for its official work with Foose and not-so-official Shelby GT500E Super Snake replicas. However, the company has a terrible reputation for customer service. Unique Performance has held a long history of taking substantial amounts for money for Eleanor restorations and holding on to them a bit too long. This, however, is not the issue at hand.

Last week, the Farmers Branch, Texas police discovered 61 vintage restorations in a raid of Unique Performance. Nothing too fishy about that, but the VIN plates were soon discovered to be temporary place-holders until the cars were resold. After lifting the fake plates, it was clear that the old ones had been scratched off.

As seen in Gone in 60 Seconds, title-washing can be quite profitable in areas where vintage bodies are limited. Such an operation would be perfect for the Dallas, Texas area, where Unique Performance is located. If you’ve already thrown down some change for a vintage Eleanor, good luck handling the implications when the Feds step in. The case could also have serious repercussions for the company’s relationship with the aftermarket giants it’s currently involved with. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
