Post Bold Moves: FR500S Ford Mustang

Several carmakers have large street racing followings but fail to utilize that crowd, essentially ignoring them. Ford is not one of those automakers. The folks at the blue oval realize and cherish their rich racing heritage.

One of the ways they’ve expressed that appreciation is through the FR500 spec series, an affordable racing grade Mustang coming straight out of Michigan. So far, they have impressed us with the FR500C and FRGT500GT, but the latest in the spec series is the FR500S. The car will hit North American tracks in 2008.

“Few manufacturers can say that they build race cars right on the production line, and we’re proud to be one of them,” said Dan Davis, director of Ford Racing Technology in an interview with TheMustangNews.com. “The FR500S provides customers and racers a chance to get into a high-performing vehicle that is durable, reliable and competitive—straight from the factory.”

And perhaps being produced in a factory is its most inimitable quality. Not only that, but every part of the process occurs in Michigan. The interior work was done by Watson Engineering in Taylor, the 4.6L 3-valve V8 production engine in Romeo. It rolls off AutoAlliance International’s Flat Rock production line, and the final sealing and dyno work is done in Livonia at Roush Industries.

Check out more photos of the FR500S and look for the FR500S in next Ford Racing parts catalog, retailing for $75,000.
