If I want to drag race, what's the best Cobra to get?

What's the best Cobra in 96-2001 for drag racing? Correct me if I'm wrong, but 1999 Cobra Mustangs have IRS which is better for course racing. Are the 99+ equipped with a better flowing intake as well?

I'm trying to deside to get a Mustang Cobra over a Mustang GT but I'm still on the fence. I want to run 11's with some sort of forced induction (all on pump.) I have around $10,000 to spend.

PS. I wish this car was my ride.

96-98 Cobra Mustang

I found this answer on another forum. This may help...

You can do or look for one of two things...

1) Easiest way is to just look for any cobra from 96-98. They are all solid axle so out of the box they are easier to drag with than the 99 and 01 cobra's (via IRS). They were rated I believe at 305 HP. You can go with nitrous, supercharger, or even turbo with these cars... I've seen a lil bit of everything done to them. One thing that I've seen some of the owners talkin about how funky the power curve (on a dyno) is for these cobra's.

2) Second is to look for a 99 or 01 cobra with a solid axle swap in them already done. This is good option and these cobra's were rated 320 HP.

3) You could also think about looking at the 03/04 Mach I's as well. They were rated at 300 HP but have the solid axle in them. Its really just a matter of taste of what you like as all of these cars are good choices.

For $10,000 you should go with a 1996-98. You'll pay more for a 1999 and it won't do much for you. Just grab a 1996 Mustang and spend more money on upgrades.
