Derrick Mabe grew up admiring his parents’ 1967 Springtime Yellow Mustang convertible. With a 289 V8 and 3-speed manual transmission, the $600 pony car was more than enough to get the family around for several years. “My mom actually used to pick me up from the after school programs in the car daily,” says Mabe.
Then, like many classics, it was garaged for several years.
With a sleek black top and black interior, it was a mystery to Mabe that neither of his older sisters was interested in the ’67 when they turned 16. “Lucky for me, they chose a VW Rabbit and a Mecury Cougar instead,” says Mabe. “Go figure that one? By default it was given to me when I turned 16 and the story began.”
Mabe and his father had already begun modding the vehicle when he was 13, and after putting every dime he made at his after school job into the Mustang, it was nearly complete by the time he was 16. He drove it on the weekends throughout high school.
Then, time passed, work happened, then kids and a family. The Mustang was again garaged and put on the back burner.
Several years ago, Mabe realized that his “high schooler’s budget” was starting to show, unfortunately. The car was dated. He was at a crossroads: sell it or rebuild?
After the necessary conversation with his second half, Mabe was reminded of his blue blooded passion for his classic Mustang vert. “My wife reminded me how much I used to talk about the car and of all the memories my dad and I have with the car,” says Mabe. “No way I could sell it.”
Now, after four years of modding and restoration, the 1967 Ford Mustang convertible is in top condition. Sporting a coat of Titanium Silver and 18”x7” and 18”x10” chrome wheels, Mabe’s classic pony car is back.
