The adolescent years are usually the most confusing and turbulent times for growing gearheads. Such was the case for Brent Blades, an avid Mustang enthusiast. But he didn’t used to be.
A self-described “Mustang hater” throughout the 90’s, Blades owned an ’86 Grand Prix, a ’97 Firebird and loathed the blue oval. “I claimed that I would always own Chevrolet and Pontiac products,” says Blades.
That all changed when his mother began her search for a new car. It came down to a Firebird Trans Am, Camaro Z28 and a Mustang GT. Blades pushed for the GM products naturally, but after several test drives of the GT, she went for the Mustang. Her son was not happy.
After several weeks, however, he heard the throaty growl of the GT exhaust with some Flowmasters his mother had added. Phew! Blades was converted.
Later that year, Blades made a six hour trek from Maryland to Virginia to purchase the dream car he found on eBay: a triple black 1990 Mustang GT convertible. With his father and friend in the vehicle, the ride seemed grueling. Once he got his hands on the drop top GT, the return trip seemed much faster, especially with the occasional stoplight race. He couldn’t help it.
The past seven years have been deeply transformational for Blades. He quickly began to modify every nook and cranny of his new passion. Starting off with the off-road H-pipe, Flowmasters and cold air induction, Blades still found himself unsatisfied. The car was “a lot more fun,” he says, “but it wasn’t nearly enough.” As that passion for modification increased, so did the points on his record, and the GT was forced to take a break from the road.
Blades has admitted that he’s still fond of GM products, but quickly adds, “I am a Ford enthusiast.” With an open mind and a lead foot, Blades is optimistic about his automotive passion. “Maybe someday I’ll even grow fond of imports,” he ponders, quickly adding “then again, maybe not.”
