newer kid on the block!
Hello there, i'm new here, just introducing myself and asking a question. I'm about to be the proud owner of a 1972 Mach 1 with a 351C. I should have it at earliest saturday, if not it will be sometime next week. Anyway, are there any common problem areas with these cars i should be aware of? Thanks in advance

Hey Brando16, glad you came over, nice place here
So as to your question, what do you mean, performance, rust, limited visability. I have owned 3 of the body style, a 72 and 2 73's Mach I.

well i've heard about the visibility issues, and the car has some rust, but i was more worried about the overall performance. Its going to be a somewhat daily driver/project car. i just want to know if there is anything particular that goes bad on these cars i should know about. I'm planning on doing a little tune up and maybe seafoam the engine. Are the brakes strong on these cars or should i upgrade them? i kind of just want to know if these cars are somewhat reliable in general.

One thing I always got in the habit of was when I parked just take a visual snapshot of the surroundings, light pole standards, pole barriers anything low. Also there is the support under the front that seems to connect with curbs quite often. As far as performance keep in mind that Mustangs are inherently light in the back end so check the numbers and see if you have a limited slip differintal, easy to swap ends if you do.
I'm not sure if this is a problem with the 72's or not, I do know it was a problem with 73's, sometimes if you're in park with the engine running they will jump out of park and into reverse. I was with a friend one night and we stopped to take a leak and fortunatly I was nosed down on a slight grade but we both jumped out and were standing at the front of my 73 MachI and next thing I knew it was backing up the hill. Yes I caught it but had it been pointed the other way I would have been craning it out of the Puget Sound. Also not sure if on the 72's but when the headlight switch gets hot the lights will go off and on. This was a problem whilst driving for obvious reasons. It has something to do with a resistor that over heats, I had mine fixed. Usually happened in the winter when you have to have it nice and toasty inside for your date The brakes seemed to be adiquate just keep them tuned up and it will be fine. If I think of more I'll be back but it been 25 years since I sold the last one. Congratulations on your purchase, I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did mine, got any photos? Oh and BTW I just looked at a 72 Mach on a car lot and condition was ok, lots of repro, guess what they wanted??? 22000.00

thanks for the info, i don't have any pics yet but i should soon. I'm about to call the current owner and set up a day to actually hand over the cash and sign title over. I wanted to do it yesterday but i was stuck at work. I'm not sure of mileage or how many owners but i couldn't pass this car up. The guy only displayed the car for sale a few hours, so i was lucky to even have passed by it that day. And it sounds amazing. It has the original numbers matching engine.

My kind of luck brando16. Be sure to put up some pics when you get her and of course we'll need all the specs
